Emergency Animal Disease Response
The Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) Response training is a suite of five just-in-time, self-paced online modules developed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Each module is designed to provide induction-level knowledge for individuals involved in different functional areas of an emergency animal disease response.

The Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) Response training is a suite of five just-in-time, self-paced online modules developed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Each module is designed to provide induction-level knowledge for individuals involved in different functional areas of an emergency animal disease response. The modules include interactive elements such as scenarios and quizzes to reinforce learning.
The five modules are:
- Surveillance
- Tracing
- Movement Control
- Destruction and Disposal
- Field Veterinary Operations
Each module can be completed individually as a stand-alone module if necessary. Alternatively, you are welcome to complete all 5 modules.
Duration
Each module is self-paced and should take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
Learning outcomes
1. Surveillance
- Understand the surveillance area and roles in an EAD response
- Identify key surveillance priorities
- Recognise your role in the response structure
- Know the responsibilities associated with surveillance
- Locate additional resources for information
2. Tracing
- Understand tracing functions in an EAD response
- Identify key tracing priorities
- Understand where your role fits in the response structure
- Know your responsibilities in tracing
- Access further reference materials
3. Movement Control
- Understand movement control priorities in an EAD response
- Understand movement permits: types and issuing processes
- Learn about the response structure and movement control teams
- Review a case study on equine influenza and the role of movement controls
- Access additional resources
4. Destruction and Disposal
- Understand destruction and disposal processes and the national framework
- Recognise the emotional impact on response staff and available support
- Develop key communication skills for stakeholder engagement
- Learn about team structures and the destruction/disposal unit
- Understand the destruction and disposal process (site assessment to implementation)
- Gain practical tips for effective role performance
- Reinforce learning through a case scenario
- Access further resources
5. Field Veterinary Operations
- Gain an overview of EAD response
- Understand the structure and responsibilities within the field operations team
- Learn about relevant legislation, emergency orders, and conduct
- Understand biosecurity protocols including PPE and "come clean, go clean"
- Learn key principles for sampling, packaging, and accurate paperwork
- Understand the importance of precise record-keeping
- Access additional learning resources
Target audience
Modules 1–4: Suitable for both veterinarians and non-veterinarians
Module 5 (Field Veterinary Operations): Targeted primarily at veterinarians, but accessible to non-veterinarians
Assessment
There are questions at the end of each section that are aligned to the learning objectives and will check your knowledge of the topic. These questions will not receive a mark but will reinforce the information.
Accredited/Non-accredited training
- All modules are non-accredited
- A certificate of completion is available for printing upon completion of each module
